Peurto Peñasco

Puerto Peñasco is a small resort with three big advantages:

  • You can easily get there from the United States, as it's only about a four hours drive from the Phoenix airport.

  • It has its own airport!  As of 2013, the airport built by Vida has been completed and you can fly down there twice a week on Mexicana Airlines.

  • Most important for golfers, it has one of the best desert golf courses of all the Vidanta resorts.  It's an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus designed course that sits on a sandy spit between the Sea of Cortez and an estuary  (see map below).

There is only a Mayan Palace and a Grand Mayan at this resort, although they keep promising a Grand Bliss.

Other pluses are

  • There is a full-size restaurant, which offers a breakfast buffet as well as other meals, plus a pool-size snack bar. The resort offers both an exercise gym and a spa which are small but quite nice.

  • In addition to the main outdoor pool, there is a small indoor pool, handy for cooler days.

  • The beach is quite, wide, and full of shells for the kids to collect.

But to make the most of this resort, you should come by car (purchase Mexican trip insurance since your USA insurance is probably not good here).  That allows you to bring down, or purchase in the town, your groceries, plus it also gives you ready access to the town of Puerto Peñasco.  In the town there is a reasonably sized super market as well as a number of restaurants and small shops.
